If your pressure washer soap injector is not drawing detergent, first install the manufacturer-approved low-pressure or detergent nozzle and make sure the detergent hose is open and unclogged. Downstream injectors generally will not siphon soap while a high-pressure nozzle is installed. If the correct nozzle does not solve the problem, check the filter, hose, detergent mixture, seals, and injector valve in that order.

1. Confirm the injector setup

Most downstream soap injectors draw detergent only when the pressure washer is operating in low-pressure mode. Check these basics:

  • Install the low-pressure, black, or detergent nozzle specified for your washer. Color codes vary, so follow the manual rather than relying only on color.
  • If the wand has an adjustable spray tip, turn it to its low-pressure detergent setting.
  • Open the injector's metering valve, if it has one. Start with a moderate setting rather than fully closed.
  • Keep the trigger squeezed while testing. The injector cannot siphon if water is not flowing through the gun.
  • Remove other accessories temporarily. A surface cleaner, turbo nozzle, or incompatible wand may not provide the low-pressure condition the injector requires.

If soap starts flowing after switching nozzles, the injector is probably working normally.

2. Check the detergent and pickup hose

The injector may not lift detergent if the solution is too thick, too cold, or heavily concentrated. Use a pressure-washer detergent that is approved for your machine and dilute it according to the product instructions. Do not use thick household cleaners, solvents, or bleach unless the pressure-washer manufacturer specifically allows them.

Inspect the entire pickup hose for:

  • Kinks or crushed sections
  • Cracks that allow air to enter
  • A loose connection at the injector
  • Hardened or swollen tubing
  • A blocked end or pickup tube

For a quick check, place the hose in a container of clean water and run the washer with the low-pressure detergent nozzle installed. If it draws water but not detergent, the detergent mixture, container pickup tube, or filter is the likely problem.

3. Clean the detergent filter and hose

Many pickup tubes have a small screen or weighted filter at the end. Remove it if the manual permits and rinse it with clean water. Dried detergent can block the screen even when the hose looks clear.

Flush the hose with clean water after every use. If the filter remains blocked, the hose is brittle, or the tube will not stay submerged, replacing the detergent pickup hose and filter is usually more practical than trying to repair them.

Do not poke a metal object into a small injector passage. It can damage the check valve or enlarge an opening that controls the detergent ratio.

4. Look for air leaks and poor connections

A downstream injector needs a sealed detergent path. Air entering through a loose fitting or split hose can prevent siphoning.

With the washer turned off and the water supply disconnected, check that:

  1. The detergent hose is pushed fully onto its fittings.
  2. O-rings and small seals are present and undamaged.
  3. The injector body is not cracked.
  4. The pickup tube reaches below the detergent surface.
  5. The filter is not floating above the liquid.

Replace damaged O-rings or the injector assembly with parts specified for your pressure washer. Avoid forcing a fitting that does not match; an incorrect connection can leak or restrict flow.

5. Check water supply and flow

Low inlet flow can prevent an injector from working correctly. Make sure the faucet is fully open, the garden hose is not kinked, and the inlet screen on the pressure washer is clean. A long, narrow, or partially collapsed supply hose can also reduce available flow.

Verify that water flows steadily from the spray gun before starting the engine or motor. If the machine surges, loses pressure, or has weak flow even with no detergent connected, solve the water-supply problem first.

6. Inspect the injector valve or check valve

If the washer has strong, steady pressure and still will not draw clean water through a clear pickup hose, the injector's metering needle, check valve, or internal passage may be stuck or worn. Mineral deposits and dried detergent are common causes.

Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions before disassembling the injector. Some injectors are serviceable, while others are intended to be replaced as an assembly. A replacement injector is reasonable when cleaning does not restore suction, the body leaks, or the internal valve is damaged.

7. Consider whether the machine uses a different soap system

Not every pressure washer uses a downstream injector. Some models use an onboard detergent tank, an upstream injector, a siphon system built into the pump, or a proprietary detergent attachment. On these machines, connecting an external pickup hose may do nothing or may cause damage.

Check the manual for the approved detergent connection and nozzle. Never bypass a detergent tank or pump component unless the manufacturer provides instructions for doing so.

When the pump or electrical system may be involved

The pump is less likely to be the first cause when the washer delivers normal water flow and pressure but does not draw detergent. Pump or motor problems become more likely if the machine also has weak pressure, severe pulsing, unusual noises, leaks, or difficulty starting.

Turn off the engine, unplug an electric washer, shut off the water, and release trigger pressure before inspecting fittings or removing parts. Do not open a pressurized system. If the machine has electrical faults, burning smells, damaged wiring, or a tripped breaker, stop using it and have it inspected by a qualified technician or follow the manufacturer's service procedure.

When to replace a part or the pressure washer

Replace the detergent hose and filter when they are cracked, permanently clogged, or no longer stay connected. Replace the injector when its valve is stuck, it leaks, or it will not siphon clean water after the nozzle, hose, filter, detergent, and water-flow checks.

Replacing the entire pressure washer usually makes sense only when the pump or motor also has a major fault, replacement parts are unavailable, or repair costs approach the cost of a suitable replacement machine.
